Success in Jankusaya
A 58 meter well and windmill pump now provide residents with potable water.
TERRA proudly reports that the potable water well and windmill pump
project in Jankusaya is completed. In March of 2006, a productive
aquifer was encountered at a depth of 58 meters. Since the rural
community has no electricity, in October of 2006, TERRA and community
leaders installed a windmill to pump the water. The system is
delivering up to a liter of clean drinking water per second, the
quantity and quality shocked many residents.
Prior to the water system, residents relied upon shallow springs and a
nearby stream for drinking water, both of which often desiccated during
the dry season. Now clean water flows to homes, and residents are
assured that they will have drinking water even in times of drought.
The well provides water for two important functions. It provides
drinking water to nearby residents and supplies irrigation water for
the local tree nursery. The nursery is a partner project, linked to the
well to improve agricultural productivity—the trees protect
soils from wind-driven erosion and provide shade to retain soil
moisture.
