Loc'taya Festival

Loc'taya

Many Bolivian traditions center around Pachamama or "Mother Earth." In this small Andean town, community members gather on the crest of a peak to sacrifice a sheep to Pachamama, asking in return healthy and bountiful crops. In a display of gratitude and compassion, each person wraps suger in coca leaves, feeds it to the sheep, and then kisses the sheep.
